Justin Taylor has helpfully commented on some of the surrounding issues concerning the Passover celebration this year.
As many of you know, Jews began celebrating Passover last night at sundown. The popular political blog, Power Line, had a post yesterday which alluded to last year’s NYT article, mentioning the lack of archaeological evidence for Israel’s exodus from Egypt and quoting an expert who said it was a myth. In response Power Line had linked to a book by Egyptologist James Hoffmeier.
Justin Taylor sent Power Line a note about this, including a section from the ESV Study Bible that briefly addresses the question of the reliability of the exodus account. You can read it Taylor’s response posted by Power Line here.
Just a note. Hoffmeier is a first rate scholar. If you have not picked up his books, Israel in Egypt or Ancient Israel in Sinai: The Evidence for the Authenticity of the Wilderness Tradition, you are missing out on two excellent pieces of scholarly analysis concerning a highly debated portion of the Biblical text.
