Reaching out to Troubled Veterans

One of my students, Duane Magee, is doing an excellent work among veterans who have ended up in prison. CBS-2 ran a great story on him and I wanted to share it with you. Go here for both video and audio. I have included an extended quote from the article below.

“Harmon spent time in jail, charged with petty theft and domestic violence, but before it was too late, he met Duane Magee, of the Loma Linda VA hospital. Magee started an outreach program for incarcerated veterans, called Veterans Affairs New Start Program, or VANS, which aims to make veterans aware of the health benefits and services available to them.

No one knows the life better than Magee, an army sergeant, who after his service ended up behind bars, for ten years. Magee says, ‘I was angry, mad. I had served this country, but I didn’t have the strength to say I needed help until I hit rock bottom.’”

Duane has been a great encouragement to me throughout the past few years that I have been at CBU. It is a true delight to see God use him and his story to reach out to hurting veterans. I am thrilled that CBS found this newsworthy.
