The Associated Press confirmed earlier this week that Israeli Archaeologist, Eliat Mazar, had discovered a section of a wall that could possibly be dated to Nehemiah’s time.
Noted archaeologist, Ephraim Stern of Hebrew Union University, confirmed the finding as emerging from the Persian period. The wall was previously perceived to be from the Hasmonean period, so the find was pretty surprising for all parties involved.
Israel Finklestein, a noted historical minimalist, disputed the find suggesting that there was really no way to determine that the wall had a Persian provenance. It will be interesting to see the conclusions Mazar publishes in the near future concerning the wall.
